For all filmmakers, the world of lenses is a magical and sacred one. The director of photography or the cinematographer chooses the lens based on several factors including budget, type of shot, look & feel, camera, etc. So, if you want to pursue a career in filmmaking then, you must be aware of which lens to choose for a particular shot. While lenses can be differentiated in a variety of ways, we are just sticking to focal lengths. So, here are the different types of lenses based on their focal length, this is not just true for a production house in Delhi, but also anywhere in the world.
Fisheye lens: With a focal length that ranges from 4mm to 14 mm, these types of lenses give the widest angle of view and these can be used for a variety of creative and abstract shots. These types of lenses produce images that have heavy barrel distortion that may seem unnatural, but at the same type quite stylistic.
Wide-angle lens: Lenses having focal lengths between 14-35mm are generally characterized as wide-angle lenses. These types of lenses can be used for showing landscapes or architectures and in places, where you want to show a wide view of a location or an event.
Standard lens: These lenses have focal lengths between 35mm to 85mm, these can be used for a variety of shots like street, travel, portrait, etc.
Short telephoto: With focal length ranging from 85mm to 135 mm, a short telephoto lens could be used for street photography and portraits.
Medium telephoto: Lenses with a focal length greater than 135mm but lower than 300mm are called medium telephoto lenses. These sorts of lenses produce telescope-like magnified images and are considered too heavy for handheld shooting. It is mainly used for sports, wildlife or to capture any action.
Super telephoto: These types of the lens have the longest focal lengths. Any lens with a focal length of more than 300mm is classified as a super-telephoto lens. These are mainly used for sports from a distance, nature, or astronomy. These are also the bulkiest type of lenses.
Macro: This is a special type of lens that is used for close-up shots. The macro lens gives you the ability to get closer to your subject because of its closer focusing distances.
