Lighting- the most faithful companion of corporate filmmaker

A corporate film or a film, in general, is the hard work of so many professionals that give extensive time and energy to a single project for a very long period of time. We know about the actors, directors, and producers but we have no clue about the rest of the bunch of people who work equally hard on the projects. Similarly, there are certain techniques in filmmaking that don’t really get the appreciation they deserve. One such technique is our beloved lighting, it is so underrated that even the word underrated feels bad about it. Lighting has been the most faithful companion of the corporate filmmaker and camera ever since filmmaking came into existence, but destiny had some other plans. The camera became the superstar of filmmaking while lighting struggled to make a name for itself. But it didn’t lose hope, it kept moving and contributing to filmmaking and today it has reached the point where people started to know its importance.

Let us drop some light on the various aspects that make lighting such an important part of filmmaking.

For any corporate filmmaker, lighting is the best tool that they can play with
Lighting lights up the frame for the corporate filmmaker
Yes, for a perfect frame you need light, and that too at the right amount, position, angle, and distance. A bad camera in good lighting can give some fine results but even the best camera can’t give you the best results if the lighting is bad. That’s the basic and most important rule. Lighting can communicate a lot just by staying still. Like our eyes need light to see the world, a camera needs light to show the world filmmakers create.
Lighting sets the mood of the film or video
Mood means the visual atmosphere that every film requires, even corporate filmmaking which generally works with natural lights also needs lighting to set the tone and visual mood of the film. Good lighting reveals the subject and their emotions with precision. Bad lighting can ruin even the best of scripts and camera work.
Lighting determines what the audience feel
In corporate filmmaking, the audience usually needs to feel positive about the company and its products. So, the lighting is also done accordingly to portray positive emotions. Similarly, if we talk about other films and movies, every genre has its own set of lighting that creates the world and its tone. The lighting of a thriller film will be completely different from a horror film,  the romantic genre will have a brighter palette of lighting than the sci-fi.
Lighting is a creative science

Don’t get confused, it’s just a wordplay but very much true. Lighting is overall a technical department but it is to be used very creatively to get the best results. A good lighting design or setup can alleviate the attention of the audience, and show intensity, aggression, or happiness without any dialogue. Lighting tells the audience where and whom to look at, it determines whose in focus. Talking about its technical side, there are certain strict rules about lighting that must be kept in mind.
